Oxybenzone is a chemical used in sunscreens, cosmetics, plastic materials as well as paints and varnishes. It acts as a ultraviolet light filter protecting and preserving products. It belongs to a group classified as benzophenones. In 2014, the group benzophenones were named Allergen of the Year by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group, bringing to light the need for awareness for this commonly incorporated ingredient. Photo contact allergies have been associated with benzophenones, although the incidence of allergies is considered a low percentage. Oxybenzone can also be listed as benzophenone 3.
